The eclectic nature of my totems is a metaphor for the diversity that exists in communities and the importance of the interaction of people of different ethnic, religious and social groups. “Working in porcelain as I do, the material is inherently translucent and white which is one of the qualities that first attracted me to it. When you pick up a small blue and white bowl from the kiln, and the light shines through between your fingers… This quality is perfect for the material to be used with light and I have long been attracted to these potentials. In this current work, I have begun to explore further the ways that light can be incorporated in with porcelain to enhance the material.” Alistair Whyte.
